Srilakshmy Lakshminarayana Puram Harikrishnan has been appointed to project 14 which is based at VIB – a life sciences research institute in Flanders, Belgium (Plant Biology). Her research is supervised by Professor Yves van de Peer.
Before joining the ALFF project in August 2015, Srilakshmy was studying for a Master of Science degree in Bioinformatics at Uppsala University in Sweden. Based at the Cell and Molecular Biophysics Laboratory under the supervision of Dr Daniel Larsson, her research focussed on the thermal exploration of RNA of a satellite virus using a molecular dynamics approach. This work led to Srilakshmy learning various molecular biology techniques including the gene cloning of virus like particles, protein purification and imaging by electron microscope, and also to Next Generation Sequencing. Based at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), her Master’s thesis covered work on identifying the paralogous genes in a non-model plant species transcriptome and the study of the fate of those genes in the evolution of the species. Her time in Sweden also meant Srilakshmy had several, enviable opportunities to see the ‘Northern Lights’ in all their hypnotic glory!
